Samsung Electronics has temporarily suspended production of its flagship Galaxy Note 7 smartphone amid mounting pressure over continuing reports that replacement devices are also catching fire.
"The company made the decision following discussions with regulators in Korea, the United States and China," said an official from a partnering company of Samsung Electronics, Monday. "The production suspension affects its manufacturing facility in Vietnam which is responsible for global shipments of the new handset."
Samsung Electronics has yet to announce its official position on the issue.
The company has been mired in a months-long controversy over reports that the Note 7 smartphone catches fire while charging. Amid mounting safety concerns, the company decided last month to recall the first batch of handsets and exchange them for new ones without any battery defects.
But Samsung continued to grapple with problems of apparent manufacturing defects in the replacement phones, following reports that a U.S. flight was evacuated after a passenger's replacement Note 7 caught fire on the airplane, last week.
When the U.S. report went viral, the country's major mobile carriers — including AT&T and T-Mobile — announced that they had halted sales of the Samsung smartphone and will exchange replacement Note 7 devices with different models, citing customer safety.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is investigating the case, and plans to release its findings soon. Samsung Electronics America said the company is cooperating fully with the U.S. regulator to find the exact cause of the defect. "We are quickly investigating the reported case to determine the cause and will share our findings as soon as possible," the company said in an earlier statement posted on its website. "We remain in close contact with the CPSC throughout this process," said the statement. "If we conclude a safety issue exists, we will work with the CPSC to take immediate steps to address the situation." Korean mobile carriers — SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus — said they are also paying close attention to the sales suspension, but did not confirm whether they would follow their U.S. counterparts. A spokesman for the nation's largest mobile carrier SK Telecom said: "There is no confirmed quality issue for any replacement Note 7 devices in Korea, so we have yet to decide on its sales suspension as of the moment." He said the company, however, will continue to keep a close eye on the CPSC's findings. KT and LG Uplus are also in talks with Samsung Electronics over a sales suspension of replacement Note 7 smartphones, but nothing specific has been discussed yet, they said. An LG Uplus official said: "We have not received any official statements from Samsung over the Note 7 sales suspension, but we will take proper action with the company to ensure customer safety." Samsung Electronics released the 5.7-inch flagship smartphone on Aug. 19 in 10 countries. But the company recalled the handset, citing safety concerns over a battery defect. On Oct. 1, Samsung resumed sales in Korea.

최근 미국을 중심으로 발화 보고가 잇따른 삼성전자 갤럭시노트7의 생산이 일시 중단됐다.
삼성전자는 10일 한국거래소의 조회공시 요구에 '최근 갤럭시노트7 소손(燒巽) 발생으로 정밀한 조사와 품질 관리 강화를 위해 공급량 조정이 있는 중'이라고 답변해 생산 중단을 사실상 확인했다.
업계 관계자는 '공급량 조정 중이라는 말은 생산 중단을 에둘러 표현한 것으로 보인다'며 '재고가 많지 않기 때문에 생산을 중단하면 자연스럽게 공급량이 바로 줄어들다 끊길 수밖에 없다'고 말했다.
삼성전자가 공급을 중단하면 단말기 유통을 맡은 이동통신사들도 제품 판매를 더는 할 수 없게 된다. 결국, 생산 중단은 공급 중단이나 판매중단과 같은 의미로 시장에서 이해된다.
다만, 갤럭시노트7 생산을 언제까지 중단할지는 결정되지 않은 것으로 전해졌다. 또 품질 관리 강화를 위한 공급량 중단이라고 밝혀 향후 재생산과 재판매의 가능성도 열어놓은 것으로 보인다.
이에 앞서 삼성전자 협력사 관계자는 이날 오전 '삼성전자가 글로벌 물량을 책임지는 베트남 공장을 포함해 갤럭시노트7의 생산을 일시 중단했다'고 전했다.
그는 '미국뿐 아니라 중국과 한국 등 글로벌 소비자들의 안전을 고려한 조치로 알고 있다'며 '삼성전자가 한국 국가기술표준원, 미국 소비자제품안전위원회(CPSC), 중국 규제 당국 등 각국 정부 기관과 협력해 조사를 진행 중이며 앞으로 필요할 경우 이들과 협력해 추가 조처를 할 것으로 안다'고 말했다.
이에 따라 10월 28일로 예정돼 있던 유럽 주요국과 인도 등 다른 시장에 대한 갤럭시노트7 공급 재개도 연기되는 등 차질을 빚을 것으로 보인다. 다만 삼성전자나 협력사들은 이런 가능성을 공개적으로 거론하지는 않고 있다.
삼성전자는 지난달 2일 한국과 미국을 비롯한 10개국에서 갤럭시노트7 판매를 전면 중단하고, 16일부터 싱가포르를 시작으로 교환 프로그램을 가동했다.
한국에서는 이달 1일 일반 판매를 재개하고, 7일 블랙오닉스 색상 모델을 추가 출시했으나 이후 다른 지역에서의 판매 재개나 출시는 이뤄지지 않았다.
한국과 중국에서만 정상 판매가 이뤄졌다.
삼성전자 내부 사정을 잘 아는 업계 관계자는 '미국에서도 리콜 제품의 교환만 진행됐으며 정식 판매를 재개하지 못했다'며 '유럽 등 다른 지역의 출시 일정도 지연될 가능성이 크다'고 말했다.
SK텔레콤, KT, LG유플러스 등 국내 이동통신 3사는 아직 공식적으로 공급 중단을 발표하지 않았으나 해외 사례를 볼 때 이른 시일에 조치가 이뤄질 것으로 전망된다.
한 이통사 관계자는 '검수 과정을 철저히 하느라 입고가 늦어질 것 같다는 얘기를 삼성전자 측으로부터 전달받았다'고 말했다.
미국 4대 이동통신사 중 2위 AT&T와 3위 T-모바일은 갤럭시노트7의 판매와 교환을 전면 중단했으며, 4위 스프린트는 온라인 숍에서 제품을 내린 상태다. 미국 1위 이통사인 버라이즌의 온라인숍에는 '재고 없음'으로 표시된 상태로 판매가 일시 중단됐다.
이번 조치는 삼성전자가 9월 초 글로벌 리콜을 발표한 데 이어 9월 하순께부터 다시 새 갤럭시노트7에서 발화 사고가 발생했다는 보고가 국내외에서 잇따른 데 따른 대응으로 보인다.
새 갤럭시노트7의 발화 사례로 지금까지 주요 언론매체 보도 등을 통해 알려진 것은 미국 5건, 한국 1건, 중국 1건, 대만 1건 등이다.
이 중 해외 사례 7건에 대해서는 조사결과 발표가 나오지 않았고, 한국에서 발생한 1건은 삼성전자가 SGS 코리아 기흥시험소와 한국산업기술시험원(KTL)에 조사를 의뢰해 '강한 외부 충격이나 눌림이 있었던 것으로 보인다'는 조사결과가 공개됐다.
미국 CPSC는 지난 5일(현지시간) 미국 켄터키 주 루이빌 국제공항에서 발생한 갤럭시노트7 항공기 내 발화 사고 등에 관한 조사결과를 이르면 이번 주 초 발표할 것으로 보인다.
지난달 15일 갤럭시노트7에 대한 공식 리콜을 한 차례 발표한 CPSC는 이번 조사결과에 따라 교환 제품의 재리콜을 발령하거나 제품의 미국 내 판매를 중단할 가능성이 있다. CPSC의 조사결과는 갤럭시노트7의 재판매에 결정적인 영향을 미칠 전망이다. (연합뉴스)
