Do sailors pay for their uniforms? ›

Enlisted members of the U.S. military receive a clothing allowance each year on the anniversary month of their initial allowance. This allowance is meant to cover the replacement of uniforms based on normal wear and tear.

Navy Working Uniform, or NWU, Type I: Introduced in 2007, blue digital camouflage was developed to standardize all uniforms between units, replacing dungarees and other working uniforms at sea and ashore.

Article 3101.1, Uniform Requirements (Officers/CPOs)

Officers and Chief Petty Officers are responsible for buying and maintaining uniforms appropriate to their assigned duties and as required by their prescribing authority. There is no minimum number of Uniforms required to be in their possession.

Retirement Pay

After completing only 20 years of honorable service, a military retiree would receive 50% of the permanent basic pay. Each year of service thereafter adds an additional 2.5% until 30 years of service is reached, at which the retiree would receive 75% of the permanent basic pay as retirement income."

Consumption of alcohol in the NWUs off-base is not permitted. Consumption of alcohol in the NWUs on base is authorized as promulgated by Regional Commanders.

(h) The use of an earpiece, blue tooth technology, headsets or hands-free device while in Uniform indoors or outdoors is prohibited unless specifically authorized for the execution of official duties (e.g. NSW, security personnel, detailers, etc.).

Only one ring per hand is authorized, plus a wedding/engagement ring set. Double stacking wedding rings with military academy/educational institution rings is authorized on one hand. Rings shall not present a safety or foreign object damage (FOD) hazard. Rings are not permitted to be worn on the thumb.

The trouser material is made of cotton fibers that swell when wet and can hold air. In the event of a sailor falling overboard or having to abandon ship without a life vest, the bell-bottomed trousers can be quickly removed in the water without having to remove footwear.

Can you use an umbrella in a Navy uniform? ›

Plain, solid black, collapsible (in length) umbrella. May be carried when weather conditions warrant, provided safety regulations or practices are not violated (for example, FOD hazard). The umbrella should be carried in the left hand to permit saluting. The umbrella shall not be carried during military formations.

Those officers who do not elect to wear Marine Corps service uniforms will wear the equivalent Navy service uniform and abide by Navy grooming and physical appearance standards.

Retired personnel, who are not on active duty, living or visiting a foreign country, may only wear a uniform to attend ceremonies or social functions when wearing a uniform is required by the terms of the invitations of customs of the country.

Nail polish may be worn, but colors shall be conservative and inconspicuous. White, black, red, yellow, orange, green, purple, grey, glitter, striped or any sort of pattern/decorative nail polish is not authorized. French and American manicures (white and off- white tips with neutral base color only) are authorized.

When traveling on leave, TAD or transfer, service dress blues may be worn during any season. 2. REGIONAL TRAVEL. For travel within a region, wear either the uniform of the day as prescribed for destination or Service Dress Blue uniform for the entire trip.

Initial Clothing Allowances are provided to enlisted members upon initial enlistment or upon other special qualification for entitlement to a prescribed outfitting of uniforms. The initial issue may be an in-kind issue or a combination of in kind issue and cash payment.

In basic training, you will receive your initial sets of uniforms. Depending on the branch, service members typically receive three to four sets of camouflage uniforms and at least one set of all other uniforms. Officers purchase their own uniforms and may receive a stipend to help offset the cost.
