But it was her time working as a certified veterinary practice manager at the Dartmouth Veterinary Hospital across the harbour from Halifax that solidified her destiny. Swinimer, who is an accountant by trade, began taking an interest in the wildlife that would come through the doors of the clinic.

In 2012, the primary worker at HFW for 8 years, and then manager, Allison Dube, left and moved to Scotland. As of 2015, the centre had helped over 15,000 animals from over 250 species. In 2018, a major member of HFW, Reid Steward Patterson, died.

About three years ago, Swinimer said Hope for Wildlife was able to rehabilitate a black bear cub before it was transferred to New Brunswick to be released. Unfortunately, she said, the bear escaped during the transfer and had to be euthanized in New Brunswick.
